With its location in the Incredible Jamaican hills, Ocho Rios is A Perfect resort town on Jamaica’s northern coast.
The Caribbean climate, miles of beaches, and tropical waters. What’s not to love? But those are only a few of the reasons to visit Jamaica. What a lot of people may not know is that the island is full of adventure and culture. There are so many things to do and so many beautiful places to see, and the locals are some of the friendliest and happiest people you will ever meet.
In this blog I wanted to highlight one of my favorite vacation spots in Jamaica, Ocho Rios.
The consistently warm weather, shopping, and adventure make Ocho Rios a popular destination for cruise ships. Most of the resorts, shops and bars are situated to the West, but once you pass the clocktower on Main St, you will experience all of the activities like farmers markets, and colorful restaurants. You’ll feel like you’re getting a taste of the real Jamaica.
Attractions such as nearby Dunn’s River Falls, Fern Gully, are perfect for those thrill seekers. If you want vibrant nightlife, they’ve got you covered also. The beaches and reggae rhythms lure travelers to Ocho Rios every year.
So whether if you decide to visit for its scenic beauty, or plan to use the town for a little more excitement, Ocho Rios is ready to acomodate.
Dining in Ocho Rios
Prepare to feel hungry! Jamaican cuisine is a mix of its cultural flavors, spices and influences! It is a mix indigenous people of Jamaica, and the European colonies who have inhabited the island.
Jamaicans typically eat a wide variety of seafood, tropical fruits and meats. Popular Jamaican dishes include curry goat, fried dumplings, ackee and saltfish (cod) – the national dish of Jamaica – fried plantain, “jerk”, “rice and peas”, and steamed cabbage.
If you’re looking to grab a tasty bite, a wonderful spot and a tourist/local favorite is Ocho Rios Jerk Centre. Everything is cooked fresh to order, and there’s plenty of affordable combinations for everyone. .
If you feel more like dressing up and dinning at a 5-Star location, try Toscanini’s, or Cafa Da Vinci.
Fancy living out the Cool Runnings experience? You should probably add Mystic Mountain to your list. This is a rainforest adventure park that includes the famous bobsleigh rollercoaster, which you maneuver along a 1000 meter track. Strap in!
If you want to take the scenery from a view you’ll never forget, there is the Sky Explorer, a chairlift that takes around twenty minutes and showcases the stunning views of Ocho Rios.
The good news is that the whole park is geared towards cruise ship passengers, so you can be in and out within three hours.
Interested in learning some cultural history? There’s a mini-museum that condenses Jamaican history pretty well.
You may have already heard this, but if you go to Ocho rios, a visit to Dunn’s River Falls is a must. This park is one of Jamaica’s main attractions, and you could easily spend a day here. There is a wonderful, and if you feel up for it, 600 feet climb you can attempt. There’s the option of climbing yourself or waiting for a guide to take you along in a group, so don’t worry if you’re a non-swimmer.
Bottom Line… You’ll love it!
Ocho Rios is a vacation destination to the max. It has a great eating scene, lively nightlife, and a plethora of adventure.
Add Jamaica's best waterfalls on its doorstep, and Ocho Rios makes an unforgettable trip for exploring the north coast.
