High on the Lowcountry

Why the “Lowcountry?”

The Lowcountry of South Carolina is unique in myriad ways, from its salt marshes, winding waterways, and sandy beaches to the native live oak trees, Spanish moss, and palmetto trees that encompass the maritime forests. These diverse habitats are what set the region apart from the rest of the state, and are truly a sight to behold.

The term "Lowcountry" was created to describe areas located below the Fall Line, a geographic region in which the hard rock of the mountains reaches the softer sand of the coastal plain. Most of the Lowcountry sits only 270 feet above sea level, while the rest of state sits much higher. So, not only is the region located in the lower portion of the state, but the land is also sunk lower into the water. Hence, the “Lowcountry.”

In order to see the beauty of the natural terrain and enjoy the rich culture, check out these must-visit places in the Lowcountry.

Palmetto Bluff

Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina

A 20,000-acre tract known as Palmetto Bluff extends from the headwaters of the May River near the town of Bluffton, skirts Bull and Daufuskie Islands via the Cooper River to its east and gives way finally to the ancient freshwater rice fields of the New River along its western edge.

Here is a wonderland of fun, relaxation, and new experiences. Ride a bike, golf cart or horse. Or hoof it (pun intended!) on trails that crisscross the property and connect the residential neighborhood to parks, recreational activities, and the villages.

Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Hilton Head is a resort town and barrier island in Beaufort County. It’s named after Captain William Hilton, who identified a headland in 1663 and named it "Hilton's Head" after himself. While there, he made note of the trees, crops, “sweet water,” and “clear sweet air.” The island is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including alligators, deer, loggerhead sea turtles, manatees, hundreds of species of birds, and dolphins – as well as some of the best golf courses in the world.

Dining Options

In the South, there’s a close connection between the waters, land and table. The fertile soil feeds corn and cattle, the palmettos provide cover for quail and game, and the ocean provides its bounty on the incoming tide.

Abundant in seasonal flavors and Southern hospitality, the dining locations at Montage Palmetto Bluff offer an array of cuisines, ranging from a Carolina Smokehouse to a Southern Italian Café, each one a culinary celebration of the land’s bounty. Set the tone for your day at Buzz (yes, they serve coffee, and it’s matchless), enjoy modern interpretations of classic Carolina cuisine at the Octagon and The River House. A “secret” entrance below The River House takes you to Hush, a modern version of the original speakeasy with an intimate bar that pays homage to its storied past.

The Canteen in Moreland Village for quick meals or snacks, Fore & Aft serving casual, Mexican-style fare for lunch from a prime vantage point for viewing the avian sanctuary, and Melt, a classic ice cream parlor that serves up scoops of freshly churned small batch ice cream plus candy, homemade cookies, brownies, and more.
