02The big idea

The big idea is a posture, not a forecast. Musk sees AI arriving either way, and he would rather help steer it:

“I guess being a participant is more interesting than being a spectator.” … “maybe I can shape it hopefully in a good direction.”

From there, the two talk through what makes AI safer and what makes it useful. Musk argues for curiosity, describes letting competitors test a new model before it ships, and agrees with Isaacson that AI in the physical world matters far more than AI on a screen.

The warmest part is about people. Musk compares a future of plenty to gardening: you could buy the vegetables, but growing them and cooking for friends is “kind of a nice touch.”

03Top takeaways

  • 01

Be a participant, not a spectator.

“I guess being a participant is more interesting than being a spectator.” Elon Musk

  • 02

    Curiosity is a safety feature.

“a curious AI, I think, is going to want to foster humanity to see how we turn out.” Elon Musk

  • 03

Let someone check your work before it ships.

Musk described inviting competitors to try a new model first: “see if you see any problems with it.”

  • 04

AI matters most in the real world.

Isaacson called physical-world AI “an order of magnitude, maybe two orders of magnitude, more important.” Musk: “Yes, yes, I definitely agree.”

  • 05

    Purpose can outlast work.

“maybe we'll find ways to be happy in the same way that people who retire seem to be, you know, fairly happy even though they're not working.”

  • 06

    The human touch still counts.

“sometimes people like to grow their own fruits and vegetables and make dinner for friends and it's kind of a nice touch.”

  • 07

    Art stays ours.

“you could certainly create art or whatever you feel like doing.”

  • 08

    The choice is ours.

Isaacson: “we'll need to decide whether we're on board or not.”

04The choice

“Elon Musk is going to keep racing to build his vision of the future and we'll need to decide whether we're on board or not.”

Walter Isaacson, closing the premiere. Put it in your earbuds on your next walk and decide for yourself.
