Back to the Future: The 1999 Acura NSX

In 1999, car design, particularly American car design, went for the oval. Hood, chassis, trunk, all rounded. Some cars looked to me like a Tic-Tac on wheels. Lamborghini’s batwings aside, even many of the European designs, Italian and German, echoed this style.

So, in 1999, this was a “car of the future.” Shaped like a dart, the 1999 Acura NSX is sleek and aerodynamic on the outside, gorgeous on the inside, and an easy driver! Acura’s innovative NSX concept and design set the automobile industry on its ear and started a cult following. It’s always been on my car “bucket list,” and when this one-owner beauty came up for auction at Bring-a-Trailer (BaT), I absolutely set my sights on it.

Expanding My Collection

My garage was already home to a Lamborghini Aventador Roadster, a Mercedes G63 AMG, a Mercedes SLS, a Rolls-Royce Dawn, a 1989 Porsche 911 Turbo Cab (Thanks BaT!), a 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cab, and a Range Rover Autobiography along with my original Ferrari Spyder and many others. I knew that this NSX would be a handsome addition to my automotive menagerie.

The 1999 Acura NSX has a huge fan base, so whenever it comes up for auction anywhere, there’s always a slew of bidders. I’d had my eye on this model for a couple of reasons. I love innovation, and this car is a perfect example. Acura took a chance and scored big. Also, interest in and excitement about this design continues to grow nearly a quarter of a century later, so it’s a great buy-and-hold investment because it will only increase in value.

Fully Loaded!

This beautiful automobile is powered by a 3.2-liter DOHC V6 engine paired with a six-speed manual transaxle. The finish is Kaiser Silver Metallic over Onyx leather, and it’s equipped with 16” and 17” aluminum wheels, a body-color removable roof panel, pop-up headlights, power-adjustable seats, automatic climate control, cruise control, an integrated rear wing, side air intakes, power-adjustable side mirrors, dual exhaust outlets, and a Bose sound system.

One of the reasons I’m a supporter of BaT is it’s growing popularity indicates a major shift for the collectable and vintage car market.

At the end of a previous blog, Bring-a-Trailer’s Vintage Car Auctions, I told you about a 1995 Ferrari F512 M I had bid on, one of only 75 delivered to North America that year. In the blog, I called it “the one that got away.” I also said that, while I didn’t win that particular auction, I would definitely be back. Persistence pays off. I won this auction, and the beautiful 1999 Acura NSX-T is now living a life of luxury in my garage – except when I want to feel my heart going like a hummingbird’s. Then I take it out for some thrills!
