How to Ignite a Fire in Others

So much of solid leadership is about igniting fire in others. Sure, you can personally have all the enthusiasm in the world about whatever it is you’re doing, but your team members share the same passion. If they don’t, you will always be behind.

So much of solid leadership is about igniting fire in others. Sure, you can personally have all the enthusiasm in the world about whatever it is you’re doing, but your team members share the same passion. If they don’t, you will always be behind. 

My businesses have been successful because we were able to spark a fire that has continued to spread. Le-Vel has surpassed $2 Billion in sales, and it’s because of an incredible community of people who are so motivated. 

Now, how do you get your team to be so on board? Here’s a few suggestions that I’ve learned along the way:

1. Start with One-on-One Time

You want your team to be on the same page and working towards the same goal. Get on the right track by making consistent clear goals and expectations an operational reality. The only way you’re going to get there is through frequent communication. Yes, the lost art of one-on-one conversations. Whether it’s in a boardroom or on a conference call, these things are crucial to holding your team accountable and keeping them motivated. 

2. Find Out What Motivates Them

How well do you know your team members? Do you know what gets them out of bed in the morning? Do you know what they're passionate about -- their goals, aspirations, and interests? The best leaders show a genuine interest in their people's jobs and career aspirations in order to motivate them the right way. Once you know what desires drive each team member, you can begin offering incentives. This is about emotional engagement.

3. Ask What They Need

It seems so simple, but you'd be surprised how often it is not asked: “What do you need right now to do your job better?” You may be surprised, or even shocked at the response you’ll get. It could be that they need access to more information, better equipment, or even another workspace. Acting on whatever it is you find out will be a huge motivational booster.

4. Praise and Compliment Often

Managing a team is not much different from being a parent. If you have children you know that well-deserved praise and recognition encourages continued positive results. As a leader you need to get into the habit of praising and complimenting your team for good qualities and work. Research studies have found that employees who receive praise on a regular basis increase their individual productivity, receive higher loyalty and satisfaction scores from customers, and are more likely to stay with their organization.

5. Help Create Purposeful Work

Everyone wants a purpose and meaning in their work. Nobody really wants to feel like they’re just doing a mundane job and clocking in and out every day. When people find purpose in their work, it not only improves that person's happiness, but it also boosts productivity. Be sure to remind your team of the human impact their work is making.

8. Show Them You Believe 

The best leaders are able to let go of the reins and delegate often. You should be able to give your team the responsibility for delivering challenging work. So often employers underestimate the potential and ability of their employees. Don’t. You’ve hired them for a reason. Show them that you believe in them and that they are capable.

It is my hope that after reading this you feel stronger in your leadership skills, and inspired to go inspire others. One last thing I’ll leave you with - managers light a fire under people; leaders light a fire in people.
